That claim is repeated constantly. It also traces back, every time we checked, to a single enthusiast's personal recommendation on one DIY blog — not to any aggregated failure-rate data. Real failure reports exist in volume: DIY Cold Plunge's own comparison notes, a longitudinal YouTube reviewer who has personally owned and failed with more than a dozen units, GearJunkie's product testing, a professional athlete's multi-year ownership account, and scattered ComplaintsBoard and Reddit threads. Nobody had pulled them into one place with a stated method before now.
Methodology
What counts, how we categorized it, and what this pass is (and isn't).
What counts as a "failure report." We only counted reports that specified: (a) the brand and model, (b) what specifically stopped working, and (c) roughly how long the unit had been in service before the issue. Vague "mine broke" comments with no specifics were excluded.
Failure categories. We split failures into two buckets, because conflating them badly distorts the reliability picture:
- Circulation failures — pump stoppage, filter clogs, hose kinks/airlocks, flow-rate drop-off. Usually user-fixable, usually doesn't require a warranty claim.

Reading this table honestly: the "no reported failures" rows (Active Aqua) reflect an absence of failure reports in the sources we reviewed, not a confirmed low failure rate — it's the same limitation every existing reliability claim about this brand has, we're just being explicit about it instead of stating it as settled fact.
What's still missing
Three gaps the first-party survey will close.
- Sample size and base rates. We don't yet know how many total units of each brand are in circulation, so we can't calculate a true failure rate — only a count of reported failures. A brand with zero reported failures in our sources may simply have fewer total owners posting online, not a genuinely lower failure rate.
- Warranty response time, quantified. Multiple sources describe multi-week waits and unclear diagnostic processes, but nobody has systematically tracked response time in days across brands. This is one of the highest-value additions the first-party survey should capture.
- Climate and usage-pattern variables. Failure likelihood plausibly varies with continuous vs. cycled operation, indoor vs. outdoor installation, and ambient temperature — none of which is controlled for in the secondary sources above.
